Activate Series: #3 – Are Pro-Life Laws Making the Defense of Life More Difficult?

This week’s #Activate post presents an interesting question—one that requires our humble examination and honest reflection. We know that numerous laws exist to protect life: The federal “partial-birth abortion” ban, the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, and multiple pain-capable and procedure-specific state laws. The battles to pass these laws were hard-fought and hard-won in the cruel and unforgiving glare of the national spotlight. Indeed, it’s been a long and difficult road. But the laws themselves raise critical questions that activists on the ground are finding harder and harder to answer. In this excerpt from our Rise Up in the Truth curriculum, we explore what these critical questions are and encourage the grassroots to examine them through a different lens.

As intellectually honest people who are called to defend the right to life, it is important for us to continuously assess our effectiveness as a movement. So as you watch this week’s clip, consider:

• In our noble quest to end legal abortion, have we created a messaging paradox instead of a clear path to victory?
• Have we allowed a breach in the consistent life ethic that has underpinned the movement since its inception?
• As we tear down all the logical fallacies in arguments for abortion, are we enshrining just as many into our own laws?

When we look candidly at where we’ve been and where we are today, it’s not difficult to see why defending life on the sidewalks, in the public square, and online is becoming so challenging. But the good news is, once we know what ails us, we can begin to search for a remedy. We can begin to see a new way forward.
