Our weekly #Activate vlog series uses clips from Educe® online courses to illuminate the truth behind the cultural battles of today (and tomorrow) and move Christians from education to action in their communities, churches, and circles of influence.
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN AS A CHILD, LATE 1770S
Everything around us today reinforces the idea that morality doesn’t come from God, but from the social usefulness of our actions and what consequences they produce. In other words, “right” is measured by how much pleasure is gained and pain reduced. Determining whether an action is “good” not only depends on the situation, but also on the degree to which that action promotes the greatest good for the greatest number. This is the philosophy of Utilitarianism, which, among many of its offshoots, produced eugenics and all of its ghastly consequences. As Educe’s Rise Up in the Truth curriculum clearly shows, Utilitarian thought has slowly crept into American culture over the past 120 years and is very much alive today. It is deeply embedded into our laws, our schools, our media, and yes, even the pro-life movement—case in point: The Beethoven argument.
This week, we hear directly from our founder and curriculum developer, Sarah Quale (recorded LIVE from Educe’s headquarters, mid-renovation!). As you learn more about this argument and its underlying philosophy, consider:
- What can we do as individuals to become more aware of this reasoning in our own thinking and actions as we defend the rights and dignity of ALL human beings?
- Does the pro-life movement actually embrace “the greatest good for the greatest number” when we put forth laws that include exceptions for the rape-conceived and disabled, in order to make progress?
- How can we be intentional in making sure we don’t align with this philosophy in our laws and in other aspects of our work?
